Joe Burns will make an emphatic appeal to Hobart's national selectors, where he can strive to back up a sparkling century of Sheffield Shield by helping Queensland bring 310.

The Bulls bowled Tasmania out at Bellerive Oval on Friday for 252 late on day three of the Shield clash.

Burns (13) and Bryce Street (21) then negotiated 18 overs, reaching 0-38 at stumps to abandon their table-top side, requiring an additional 272 runs on day four.

Since being dumped from Australia's Test side, Burns, playing his first Shield game, scored 171 in Queensland's first-innings total of 275.

The next test for Australia will not come until next summer unless they make the final of the World Championship this year, but an excellent end to the Shield season will help keep Burns at the forefront of the thoughts of the selectors.

The injury caused absence of Test squad members Mitchell Swepson and Michael Neserer has weakened Queensland.

On Friday, Bartlett led the visiting attack, claiming Test skipper Tim Paine's main wickets and Tasmania's top scorer Jake Doran (55) amid a haul of 4-59.

During the Big Bash League season's elimination stages, Bartlett, who was repeatedly substituted out of the Brisbane Heat's XI, helped the Bulls battle back on day three at the end of the morning session.

Both Jordan Silk (51) and Mac Wright (10) bound deliveries to wicketkeeper Jimmy Peirson from Bartlett, falling fifth and sixth over the 22-year-old.

Doran was caught behind after tea, having batted tentatively as he tried to set an imposing target for the table-topping Bulls.

During the post-lunch session, Bartlett played a part in two wickets, holding a catch to dismiss first-innings centurion Caleb Jewell for 14, then trapping Paine lbw for nine.
