Born in Sialkot, now in Pakistan, on March 27, 1923, Gulati dropped out of school in class five. With the aid of his father, he set up a small business in 1937 with mirrors, soaps and carpentry. With him selling fabric and machinery, the company grew further. He had never begun dealing in grains. After the Partition, Gulati arrived in India and reached Delhi in September 1947, with Rs 1,500 in his pocket. Gulati briefly served as a cart puller, according to his profile on the MDH website. He built a small shop with the money earned by doing meagre jobs and named it after his family company, raising the banner of Sialkot's MDH.

Gulati is also renowned for his philanthropic work and has founded a hospital and many educational institutions in Janakpuri, New Delhi.

Reportedly, Gulati was the highest paying CEO in the FMCG sector in 2017. According to an ET survey, his company MDH had reported a 15% rise in sales to Rs 924 crore with a 24% increase in net profit to Rs 213 crore.
